What the engine light means

The OBD2 system (in every car since 2001 petrol and 2003 diesel) monitors dozens of engine sensors: temperatures, pressures, exhaust oxygen, throttle position, EGR, AdBlue, DPF. When one reads out of range, the ECU stores a DTC code (Diagnostic Trouble Code) and lights up the amber engine light.

The light doesn't tell you which fault — only that there is one. To know which, you need to read the codes with an OBD2 scanner.

Important: amber vs red

If the light is amber and steady, there's a pending fault but you can drive cautiously to the workshop. If it flashes or comes on with red lights or power loss → stop the car and call. It usually signals a serious misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter in minutes.

The 7 most common causes (by frequency)

1. Lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) — ~22% of cases

Symptoms: high fuel consumption, slight power loss, steady light. Typical codes: P0130, P0135, P0141.

The most exposed engine sensor (sits in the exhaust, handles 800°C). Gets dirty or degrades with mileage. Cost: €80–250 fitted, depending on brand.

2. Loose fuel cap — ~17%

Symptoms: steady light, no other symptoms. Code: P0455, P0457.

Yes, seriously. The OBD2 system detects leaks in the fuel vapour circuit — a loose cap triggers the code. Tighten it, drive 50 km, and it clears itself. If it persists, there's a leak in the EVAP system (more serious).

3. Ignition coil — ~15%

Symptoms: rough idle, jerks when accelerating, flashing light (not steady). Codes: P0301–P0306 (misfire on cylinder N).

Old coils, especially on VAG TFSI and BMW engines. Cost: €50–180 per coil (sometimes all need replacing).

4. Clogged EGR — ~12%

Symptoms: power loss, limp mode, smoke. Codes: P0401, P0402, P0404.

Common on diesels past 100,000 km. Carbon blocks the valve. Ultrasonic cleaning first (€150–250) before replacement (€400–700).

5. Saturated DPF (particulate filter) — ~10%

Symptoms: DPF light + check, power loss, limp mode. Codes: P2002, P244A, P244B.

Diesel with lots of short trips. First forced regeneration with scanner (€60–120). If it doesn't regenerate, decarbonisation or replacement (€500 to €2,000+ depending on car).

6. MAP / MAF sensor — ~8%

Symptoms: power loss, high fuel consumption, rough idle. Codes: P0101, P0102, P0106.

Dirty intake pressure sensor or air flow meter. Specific cleaner solves half the cases (~€30). Replacement: €80–200.

7. Exhausted catalytic converter — ~6%

Symptoms: steady light, MOT emissions failure, exhaust noise. Codes: P0420, P0430.

The most expensive. Catalysts last 150,000–250,000 km but can also fail from a bad coil or lambda not replaced in time. Cost: €400–1,500.

What to do when it comes on

  1. Check if the light flashes or is steady. Flashing → stop and call a tow or workshop. Steady → you can keep going with caution.
  2. Check the fuel cap. If you recently opened it, tighten it and restart. It may clear itself in 2-3 starts.
  3. Check for other symptoms: power loss, smoke, noises, high engine temperature. If yes → don't persist, go to the workshop.
  4. Don't ignore it for more than a few days. Even if driving normally, the ECU may enter "safe mode" and raise consumption. And if it was a small fault, waiting makes it expensive.
  5. Ask for an OBD2 diagnostic at a workshop. In 30 minutes they'll tell you exactly what it is.

Our recommended trick: never clear the code without diagnosing

There are phone apps and cheap devices (ELM327) that clear codes without fixing the fault. The light goes off for 10 minutes and comes back. All you achieve is losing track of the problem and worsening the fault. If you find the light off on a used car purchase but codes are stored in memory, be suspicious — the seller cleared it before showing it to you.
