What it actually means when your car "loses oil"

There's an important difference almost nobody explains properly: an engine can burn oil internally — past the piston rings or valve guides and out through the exhaust, with no stain on the floor — or it can lose oil through a worn gasket or seal, which does leave a visible trace. Both drop the level in the sump, but they're diagnosed and fixed differently.

This article is about external leaks: the ones that leave a stain under the car or drip onto hot engine parts. By far the most common cause of "my car is losing oil" that we see in the workshop.

How to catch a leak before it gets serious

Most leaks start small and get worse over time. Signs to watch for:

  • A dark stain under the car after it's been parked overnight — the clearest sign, and the easiest to check.
  • Oil level dropping between changes for no obvious reason — check the dipstick every 3–4 weeks, cold and on level ground.
  • A burning oil smell while driving or after stopping, especially if the leak is dripping onto the exhaust or turbo.
  • Oil pressure warning light on — by this point the level is genuinely low; don't keep driving, stop the engine.
  • Blue smoke on cold start-up or acceleration — could be a leak reaching a hot area or internal oil burning; a proper diagnostic tells the two apart.
What many people don't know

Topping up oil every few weeks "because the car keeps asking for it" isn't a fix — it's masking the symptom. A small leak that costs €100 to fix today can end up dripping onto the timing belt or the exhaust, and then you're looking at a much bigger repair — or a genuine fire risk if oil lands on a hot turbo.

The 6 most common oil leaks

  1. Rocker cover / valve cover gasket. The rubber dries out with engine heat, and it's by far the most common leak. Usually shows up as a thin oily film on the top of the engine.
  2. Crankshaft seal (front or rear). Shows up with mileage, especially past 120,000–150,000 km. The rear seal is more work because it sometimes requires removing the gearbox.
  3. Oil pan gasket. Degrades with age or gets damaged by an impact underneath (kerbs, speed bumps taken too fast). Easy to spot: the stain appears right under the engine.
  4. Poorly tightened or low-quality oil filter. Sounds minor, but it's one of the most frequent causes after a rushed oil change — the filter's rubber gasket doesn't seal properly and drips from day one.
  5. Turbo or camshaft seal. Mostly on diesels — the turbo's oil seal wears and lets oil pass into the exhaust. You'll notice blue smoke and higher oil consumption, not always a stain on the floor.
  6. Head gasket. The most serious and expensive. Sometimes starts as a minor oil leak and ends up mixing with coolant — at that point the engine is at real risk.

What happens if you keep driving with the leak

The risk isn't just breaking down. With the oil level low, the pump can suck in air on corners or under braking and leave critical engine parts — bearings, crankshaft, camshaft — unlubricated for a moment. The typical result is a seized engine, a bill running into the thousands versus the hundreds a gasket costs. A leak dripping onto the exhaust or turbo is also a smoke — and in extreme cases, fire — risk. And at the MOT/ITV, a visible leak is a fail point — it can stop you passing.

The gap between fixing a gasket in time and waiting for it to get worse is almost always hundreds versus thousands of euros.
