What the timing belt does and why it's so critical

The timing belt synchronises the crankshaft with the camshaft: it makes the valves open and close exactly when the piston is out of the way. It's a reinforced rubber belt working hidden behind a cover — you can't see it, can't hear it, and no dashboard light warns you about it.

If it snaps with the engine running, in so-called "interference" engines (the vast majority of modern ones) the pistons strike the open valves. Typical outcome: bent valves, damaged guides, sometimes pistons and cylinder head. In other words, major engine repair.

How often it needs changing (rough guide by brand)

The interval is set by the manufacturer and varies a lot by engine. Typical ranges:

• VAG group (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda): 90,000–120,000 km on most TDIs; some TSIs use a chain.
• PSA / Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel): 100,000–180,000 km depending on engine; the 1.2 PureTech with its wet belt needs shorter intervals in city driving.
• Renault / Dacia: 90,000–160,000 km.
• Ford: 120,000–200,000 km; the 1.0 EcoBoost with belt-in-oil — special attention.
• Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, BMW, Mercedes: many engines use a chain instead of a belt (see below).

Belt or chain? How to know what your car has

A timing chain is, in theory, designed to last the engine's lifetime — although in practice some well-known engines stretch it early (BMW's N47, VW's 1.2 TSI, certain PSA THP units). The chain does warn you: a metallic rattle on cold start for the first few seconds. If you hear it, come in for a diagnostic before it jumps a tooth.

5 signs the belt is on its last legs

1. Age or mileage near the interval — the most reliable sign. Don't wait for symptoms: belts usually snap without warning.
2. Squealing or humming from the timing area — could be an idler or the tensioner about to seize.
3. Oil or coolant stains on the timing cover — leaking seals degrade the rubber fast.
4. Rough starting or loss of power — the belt may have jumped a tooth.
5. Visible cracks or fraying — if you can see it with the cover off, it needs changing immediately.

What a proper replacement includes

Changing "just the belt" is a false economy: the idlers and tensioner carry the same wear, and if they seize they take the new belt with them. A professional job includes:

• Complete timing kit: belt, idlers and tensioner (original or OEM-grade kit — Gates, Continental, SKF, INA).
• Water pump — in most engines it's driven by the belt itself; replacing it later separately would cost nearly all the labour again.
• Fresh coolant if the pump is replaced.
• Auxiliary (poly-V) belt — it comes off anyway, so replacing it adds very little to the price.
• Engine timing with the specific locking tools — without correct timing, the engine runs out of sync.

What a timing belt change costs in Valencia (2026)

Indicative prices with an OEM-grade kit and water pump included:

• Compact engines (1.2–1.6, easy access): ~€350–500
• Mid-size engines (1.9–2.0 TDI/HDI and similar): ~€450–650
• Complex engines (V6, wet belt, poor access): ~€650–950

If a quote seems suspiciously cheap, ask two things: does it include the water pump? and which brand of kit are they fitting? That's usually where the difference hides.
