What the DPF/FAP is and why it clogs
DPF (diesel particulate filter) and FAP (its French/Spanish name) are the same part: a ceramic filter in the diesel exhaust that traps soot before it leaves the tailpipe. It's been mandatory on diesels since Euro 5 (around 2009–2011 onward), and it works very well… as long as it can burn off the soot it collects.
The catch is that this soot has to be cleared periodically through regeneration (more below), and that burn-off needs a hot engine and a stretch of sustained driving. If the car only does short city trips, the filter never reaches the right temperature, soot builds up and it ends up blocked. That's why it's a classic fault on urban diesels.
Symptoms of a clogged DPF
The signs appear gradually. The sooner you act, the cheaper the fix:
- DPF warning light on the dash (a filter symbol with dots). It means the car is asking for a regeneration — not yet a serious fault.
- Loss of power and "limp mode" — the car limits revs to protect itself. This is the stage most people reach the workshop at.
- Higher fuel consumption — the engine is working hard and trying to regenerate without success.
- Strong burning smell or smoke during failed regenerations.
- Check engine light alongside the DPF light — which is why a proper diagnostic that reads the real values beats guessing.
- The cooling fan keeps running after you switch off — a sign of frequent forced regenerations.
Regeneration: passive, active and forced
Before talking about cleaning or replacing, you need to know how a DPF "empties itself". There are three levels:
Passive regeneration
Happens by itself on the open road, when the exhaust stays above 350–500 °C (motorway, long runs). The soot burns off without you noticing. It's the ideal scenario — and the one an urban car almost never gets.
Active regeneration
The ECU triggers it by injecting a little extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature. It needs several minutes of continuous driving. If you cut it short by switching off mid-cycle (typical in the city), it stays half-done and soot keeps building.
Forced regeneration in the workshop
When the DPF is heavily loaded but not yet destroyed, we connect the diagnostic tool and force a controlled regeneration with the car stationary, monitoring temperatures and back-pressure. It's the cheapest fix when caught in time.
Many "clogged" DPFs are actually full of ash, not soot — and ash won't burn off with any regeneration. Regeneration removes soot; ash (residue from oil and additives) only comes out with an off-car pressure wash or ultrasonic clean. That's why regenerating sometimes does nothing: the right diagnosis tells the two apart before you spend a cent.
Fixes step by step (cheapest to most expensive)
- Real diagnosis first. We read back-pressure, kilometres since the last regeneration, soot level and ash level. This decides everything else.
- Driving + forced regeneration. If the filter is loaded with soot but healthy, a forced regeneration (sometimes plus a motorway stretch) sorts it. The most economical option.
- Cleaning additive in the tank for mild cases, as support — never as a magic fix once the DPF is already saturated.
- Professional DPF cleaning (removed, pressure-washed or ultrasonic). Recovers ash-loaded filters that no longer regenerate, at a fraction of the price of a new one.
- DPF replacement. Last resort, when the ceramic substrate is melted or cracked and no longer filters. Here a new part really is needed.
One honest point: removing or "gutting" the DPF is not legal. A diesel with no particulate filter won't pass the MOT/ITV (opacity is measured) and pollutes far more. We don't do it, and be wary of anyone offering it as a cheap shortcut.
Why it clogs again (and how to avoid it)
If you only clean the DPF but don't fix the cause, you'll be back. Behind a saturated filter there's usually another fault dirtying it: worn injectors, a stuck EGR valve, a faulty differential pressure sensor, a turbo burning oil, or the wrong engine oil (it must be low-SAPS, low in ash). So beyond cleaning, we look for the reason. And if you only drive in town, treat your car to a 20–30 minute motorway run now and then: it's the "free regeneration" it needs.
What fixing a DPF costs in Valencia (2026)
Indicative prices, VAT included, depending on the real state of the filter:
- DPF diagnostic: ~€30–50 (deducted if we go ahead with the repair).
- Forced regeneration in the workshop: ~€60–120.
- Professional cleaning (removal + wash): ~€150–350 depending on access and model.
- New DPF (part + labour): from ~€600 on compacts and up to €1,500–2,000 on some models.
The gap between regenerating in time and replacing the filter is hundreds or thousands of euros. Which is exactly why that first warning light shouldn't be ignored.
